Call for Volunteers with Toronto Hospice

Hospice Toronto is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing continuity of care through volunteer care teams. Care is provided to individuals and their families in the Toronto area who are living with life-threatening/life-limiting illnesses.  A number of our volunteers provide complementary therapies such as Therapeutic Touch to our clients as part of Hospice Toronto’s Complementary Therapy program.

There is a growing need for these services in hospice palliative care and we are currently investigating ways to expand the recruitment of Complementary Therapy Volunteers.

Preparation for doing this type of volunteer work includes an extensive 35 hour Volunteer Training Program which is scheduled to begin on June 6, 2013. For more information and to register for an upcoming Information Session contactSally Blainey, Manager, Volunteer Services at 416-364-1666 X 226 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Liability Insurance – Why you need the protection for accidents and errors.

As we travel to and from our homes to bring change to help others heal, we constantly learn by growing our knowledge base and skills practiced in Therapeutic Touch.   What accidents can happen as we age gracefully and our own movements become just a little more awkward?

It is important to understand that when we offer our services even for a non- monitory fee we may have accidents before, during and after we treat our clients.  There are possible situations where we may be held liable for our actions which may result in  property damage and or bodily physical injury and this is where liability insurance  helps us to protect our assets.

A few examples which may occur as we age:   While hauling out the massage table we may scratch a client’s car that was not parked exactly straight; when we arrive at the home’s  entrance a large dog runs up to us and we drop the table and cause a large dent in the unscratched beautiful hardwood floors;  we proceed to set up the new type of aluminum table and knock over a candle which set off a small fire;  the table has special leg locking devices and one of them is not locked in resulting in a client falling off the table and injuring themselves.  We have not even yet begun our treatment.

Many of our members and volunteers do not have insurance coverage principally because they feel Therapeutic Touch involves very little touching.   There are many more examples of possible damage to property  that may arise and also errors and omissions in the performance of our treatments.  Few of our members are insured due to the high costs for individual non group insurance.

As a result of the positive survey responses, extensive research was commenced by TTNC for a major insurance company  that would carry the risk for at least 200 members at an extremely affordable cost.  We found several brokers and selected one of the specialized major brokers in Canada. BFL Canada has been accepted to obtain the Liability Insurance. Their proposal is now on the www.ttnc.ca and our website (see below).

The application form for the insurance has been sent out to all the members who have e mail and it is also printed in the In Touch for photocopying and filling out the application.  Please note that only members in good standing with their own networks can apply for this insurance. Each application is important to reach the goal of having at least 200 members to apply for the insurance covering  2 million dollars of Liability This Protection  is available for a low cost of $125.00 per year.  Your participation is requested to individually take advantage of this low cost National Insurance Plan for Therapeutic Touch Members.   Options are also available for other modalities. We have also negotiated that the costs for this year can be paid over three installments.  This protection will also help Therapeutic Touch to grow in many communities.

Leo Gregory   TTNC VP Communications

Deadline for applications is November 30, 2012

The insurance company has agreed to offer the insurance for another year, even though we did not meet the number required for this low cost. Please consider applying for this insurance. The offer will not be available next year unless we meet the minimum 200 applications. The policy starts December 1st, 2012.  Individuals can still apply after the date but they have in effect fewer days of protection if they apply later. There is a partial reduction of costs but only after quarterly period.
